Who doesn’t, but seriously: over the past 20 years, there has been a radical shift in the way that the average person spends their time. We’re in front of our computers and phones all day. Some people are even zombies!
People used to spend more time roaming around and being out and about. Don’t worry, we’re not here to lecture you on fitness, but the truth is, it’d be a bit irresponsible to sell you accessories that help you keep your devices running without telling you a bit about the blue light that you expose yourself to when you’re on your phone, laptop or tablet. Staying connected is important, but your health is more important.
WHAT’S BLUE LIGHT?
Blue light is everywhere. As much as 40% of the light from the sun’s rays are blue light rays.
So why is it so bad?
Well, the short version of it is that blue light penetrates more deeply into your eyes than other forms and light and can cause irreversible damage, so if you’re exposed to too much throughout your day. Have you ever stared at a screen for so long that you eyes feel unfocused for a long time, even after trying to relax away from the screen?This is eye exhaustion and it’s something you need to be aware of. This often happens in office environments with tons of computers and tons of artificial lighting. This is caused by overexposure to blue light. the more extreme forum of this is Macular degeneration. Macular degeneration is where someone may experience persistent blurry vision, difficulty recognizing faces, reading, and driving. This is not full-on blindness but it is a very serious condition that can hamper your lifestyle.
Now, before you freak out and stop going outside, you must remember that the reason people aren’t going blind as they walk around and go about their lives is because people aren’t often standing outside and staring directly into the sun for hours on end. Previous generations didn’t work in front of computer screens, but these days as much as 60% of adults spend at least 6 hours in front of a computer screen.
Beyond damaging your eyesight, blue light can also mess with your ability to sleep.
Our bodies are in-sync with the sunlight and as the sun goes down and our bodies begin to produce melatonin, a chemical that lets our bodies know it’s time to go to sleep.
It has been found that blue light rays from artificial light sources inhibit your pineal gland and stop it from producing melatonin which can lead to sleeplessness and insomnia. So, blue light is out there and it can definitely harm our ability
What can you do about Blue light?
there are many things you can do:
1. Expose yourself to lots of sunlight. Try and go outside and get at least 1 hour of sunlight during the day.
2. Consider downloading a blue light blocking program that you can set for night-time work hours so that you don’t disrupt your sleep too much.
3. Purchase special blue light blocking glasses.
4. Do a blackout period where you turn off all your blue light emitting devices 1-2 hours before bed so you can wind down naturally. of course, the best protection against too much blue light is to just turn off the computer, tv and lights late at night and just do what nature intended: sleep!
Ultimately, the first step to protecting yourself from something is to be aware of it.
